Pretty in Plaid

This box was so much fun that I will try not to ramble on with sheer giddiness! This was a piece created for a charity banquette in 2004. I was a bit infatuated at the time with the relation between patterns and how they subconsciously stimulate us. The “plaid” pattern, I’ve read, actually plays a bit of a trick on our mind… I had to try it out. “Pretty in Plaid” was created using over 63 separate pieces of wood, over 40 gluing/assembling operations, and a whole lot of brain teasing! I loved every second of it! I used exotic woods that would contrast- yet compliment each other. It came together slower than other pieces simply due to the number of pieces that all had to be strategically pieced together. The contrasting plaid pieces were made using 4 different types of exotic hardwoods… Congolese Teak, figured Black Walnut, Gabon Ebony, and Snakewood. It is carved and buffed inside and out, and hinged using my handmade steel pin and sleeve invisible hinges. It measured 9”length x 5½” width x 4½” height and is inlaid with my hand-carved Ebony and Ivory Woodworks logo for authenticity. “Pretty in Plaid” was very well received at the charity auction, and now resides with its owner in Prince George, B.C. (2004)
