InTradition
This stunning piece was created for, and dontated to the Citizen of The Year's fundraising gala, in Prince George B.C, where procedes are given the Prince George Community Foundation. This was the third consecutive year I was invited by local Designer Goldsmith, Darrell Hubbell, to attend the event with my creation and donate to such a wonderful cause in my community. Bill Lynch was named Citizen of The Year, and the silent auction raised $11,655.00 this year.
This piece was created with a more traditional design, using a stunning array of exotic hardwoods. The main body was constructed of Pernambuco, which is a hardwood originating from Brazil... it is an absolutely exquisite wood. It has such beautiful colors, depth, and figure... and is just so wonderful to work with. For the lid I used Mecassar Ebony with Purple Heart trim, and a fine detail of African Ebony. It is invisibly screwed together, for an assured longevity. The hand carved African Ebony corners cover the screws, and also act as feet.
This piece was designed with function in mind. I lined it with black Leather, and gave it a subtle shape inside by creating beautifully curved seams to "soften" the look of the interior. It is hinged with the highest quality solid Brass, Gold Plated hardware.
I used a water-based lacquer finish... my favorite! It is a urethane/acrylic co-polymer. This type of finish is so beautiful to use. I get very connected to my pieces during the tedious polishing process.... which is done by hand with cut polishes. It is so exciting when you see the clarity of the finish start to change with the hand rubbing using finer and finer grits of the polish... and then the final wax coat. It's unbelievable! The end result is almost indescribable... imagine a piece of glass with butter on it... that's pretty much it. The finish just brought all the shapes and colors of this box together. It was awe inspiring, and "not just woodwork, but an Artpiece of Perfection"... so I was told!
InTradition was inlaid with my genuine hand carved Ebony and Ivory Woodworks logo for authenticity. It was auctioned to the Very Ecstatic highest bidder, and will be forever enjoyed, and well taken care of.
